Job Description

The Amazon Books Recommendation Experiences team seeks talented individuals to develop innovative discovery solutions, focusing on robust backend services and engaging front-end experiences. The team helps millions of readers find their next great read by creating personalized experiences that connect readers with books matching their interests.

A Software Development Engineer II at Amazon works on complex challenges, owns their systems end to end and influences the direction of technology that impacts millions of customers worldwide. At Amazon, an SDE II can expect to design scalable solutions and work on challenging problems in backend services and front-end customer experiences (CX).

Key job responsibilities
As an SDE II, you will design, develop, and launch scalable software components, with a focus on backend services and front-end CX. You will be responsible for translating business requirements into technical designs, making informed technology choices, and implementing solutions with the help of other engineers. You will work closely with engineers, UX designers and product managers to build efficient backend services and intuitive front-end experiences. You will have opportunities to mentor junior engineers and contribute to the team's technical strategy.

A day in the life
- Design and develop scalable backend services and APIs that power our personalized book discovery experiences
- Collaborate with front-end engineers in organization to create responsive and engaging user interfaces
- Contribute to the full software development lifecycle, including coding standards, code reviews, build processes, testing, and operations
- Optimize backend performance and ensure high availability of services
- Mentor and guide other software engineers, fostering a culture of technical excellence and innovation
- Influence the team's technical and business strategy by proposing and driving new project ideas

About the team
You'll be joining a diverse and dynamic team of engineers, scientists, UX designers, data engineers, and product managers. We're dedicated to creating interactive experiences that help customers find relevant books faster and discover surprising titles. Our projects combine robust backend services with engaging front-end experiences, and we're looking for someone who can help drive innovation in this space.- 3+ years of experience contributing to the design and development of scalable backend services and front-end applications
- Strong programming experience with at least two modern programming languages such as Java, Python, Scala, Kotlin, C++ or Javascript
- Experience with front-end technologies such as React, Angular or Vue.js
- Experience with RESTful API design and implementation, understanding of database systems and data modeling
- Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams, including UX designers and product managers- 5+ years of experience contributing to the architecture and design of complex, distributed systems with a focus on high availability and scalability.
- Experience with cloud technologies, preferably AWS, and microservices architecture.
- Experience with A/B testing and data-driven decision making
- A good understanding of Software Development Life-cycle models and a track record of shipping software efficiently.
- Bachelor’s OR Master’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering or a related technical discipline

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $129,300/year in our lowest geographic market up to $223,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
