Principal Engineer, Core Infrastructure

Who you are

You have extensive experience in infrastructure engineering, with a strong focus on compute, networking, and storage solutions. Your hands-on approach allows you to architect and evolve complex systems, particularly with Kubernetes and CI/CD pipelines. You understand the importance of defining platform SLOs and using error budgets to balance reliability and velocity. You are skilled in writing high-impact code and automation, and you enjoy mentoring others to raise the bar on operational excellence.

You thrive in environments where you can lead through design and code, rather than through direct reports. Your ability to set technical standards and guide teams through incident learning and readiness reviews is a testament to your leadership skills. You are passionate about improving developer velocity, focusing on build and deploy times, and ensuring a smooth local development experience.

Your experience includes collaborating with cross-functional teams, particularly in security and FinOps, to build guardrails for cost, security, and compliance. You are also interested in embedding AI into the developer experience, enhancing tools for code generation and observability.

Desirable

Experience with cloud platforms and a strong understanding of cost management in cloud environments would be beneficial. Familiarity with incident response practices and a proactive approach to capacity planning are also desirable traits.

What you'll do

In this role, you will architect and evolve the Kubernetes platform, focusing on service mesh, networking, and CI/CD pipelines. You will be responsible for shipping golden paths and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) modules that enhance the developer experience. Your work will directly impact how teams at Klaviyo ship their products quickly and safely.

You will define platform SLOs and leverage error budgets to guide decisions on reliability versus velocity trade-offs. Your leadership will drive incident learning and readiness reviews, ensuring that the team is prepared for any challenges that arise. You will also lead capacity planning efforts, making commitments that align with business goals while managing costs effectively.
