Staff Software Engineer, Backend

Who you are

You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience building production systems at scale — you've owned services from design through deployment and have navigated complex distributed systems issues. You possess deep expertise in Java and Spring — you've shipped high-throughput APIs that handle millions of requests and have strong opinions on service architecture, dependency injection, and testing strategies. Your experience with microservices architecture is extensive — you understand the challenges of transitioning from monolithic systems and have successfully implemented microservices in previous roles. You are familiar with cloud platforms like AWS — you know how to leverage cloud services to enhance application performance and scalability. You have a solid understanding of containerization technologies such as Docker and orchestration tools like Kubernetes — you can efficiently manage and deploy applications in a containerized environment. You are a mentor at heart — you enjoy guiding junior to mid-level engineers and sharing your knowledge to help them grow in their careers.

Desirable

Experience with large-scale web applications is a plus — you have a track record of developing and running applications that serve a significant user base. Familiarity with performance optimization techniques and security best practices is highly desirable — you understand the importance of building secure and efficient systems. You are comfortable collaborating cross-functionally — you can effectively communicate with product managers and other stakeholders to align technical solutions with business goals.

What you'll do

As a Staff Backend Engineer at DoorDash, you will develop, release, and run large-scale web applications that power our logistics engine. You will define the backend architecture and tech stack for your product area, ensuring that it meets the needs of our consumers, merchants, and dashers. You will improve the performance, reliability, scalability, and security of our backend systems, tackling complex technical challenges head-on. You will be involved in transitioning our monolithic codebase to a microservice-based architecture, which will require you to evaluate trade-offs and make informed decisions that maximize business impact. You will lead cross-functional projects from start to finish, collaborating with various teams to ensure successful implementation. You will also mentor junior engineers, helping them navigate their career paths and develop their technical skills. Your role will be hybrid, requiring some in-office time, and you will report to an Engineering Manager.
