Job Description

Amazon is seeking a Principal Research Scientist with deep expertise in operations research, optimization, and supply chain systems to join Japan's Stores team. This leader will design and advance state-of-the-art models that power Amazon’s fulfillment, transportation, and inventory planning networks, directly impacting how we deliver for millions of customers worldwide.

As a Principal Research Scientist, you will define and drive the research agenda for complex supply chain problems at global scale. You will apply operations research, optimization, and machine learning techniques to build solutions that reduce cost, improve speed, and increase resilience across Amazon’s fulfillment and logistics networks. You will partner with senior scientists, engineers, product managers, and business leaders across Retail, Operations, and Transportation to design and implement models that make Amazon’s supply chain smarter and more efficient every day.

The ideal candidate has a track record of publishing and applying novel optimization methods to real-world, large-scale supply chain problems, and can influence both technical and business stakeholders. This is a unique opportunity to innovate on some of the most complex supply chain challenges in the world.- 10+ years of tech industry or equivalent experience
- Experience working effectively with science, data processing, and software engineering teams
- PhD in a quantitative discipline such as statistics, mathematics, economics, computer science, or any related quantitative field- Experience implementing models and tools through the use of high-level modeling languages (AMPL, Mosel, R, Matlab, Julia)
- PhD in Operations Research, Industrial Engineering, Applied Mathematics, or related quantitative field.
- Distinguished track record of published research in top OR/optimization conferences and journals.
- Experience developing models at global scale for supply chain, transportation, or manufacturing systems.
- Familiarity with machine learning techniques and integration with optimization frameworks.
- Experience mentoring senior scientists and guiding research roadmaps.
- Ability to manage multiple research programs simultaneously with high business impact.
