Waymo is seeking a Senior Applied Research Scientist in Perception to develop advanced perception systems for autonomous vehicles. You'll work with large-scale real-world data and collaborate with cross-functional teams. This role requires expertise in machine learning and computer vision.
You have a strong background in applied research, particularly in the field of perception for autonomous systems. With a minimum of 5 years of experience, you have developed methods for efficiently learning from large-scale real-world data and have a deep understanding of machine learning principles. Your expertise in computer vision allows you to analyze real-world behavior and develop systems that handle complex interactions in dynamic environments. You are comfortable collaborating with cross-functional teams and have experience optimizing models for both onboard and offboard hardware. You are passionate about leveraging data to improve the safety and efficiency of autonomous driving technologies.
Experience with large datasets and sensor fusion techniques is a plus. Familiarity with deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow or PyTorch will enhance your ability to contribute effectively to the team. You are also encouraged to bring innovative ideas to the table, as the team values creativity and forward-thinking approaches to problem-solving.
In this role, you will be responsible for developing and optimizing perception algorithms that enable the Waymo Driver to understand its environment. You will work closely with the Perception team to build systems that learn spatial-temporal representations and their semantic meanings. Your work will involve analyzing vast amounts of driving data collected from various sensors, allowing you to refine and enhance the perception capabilities of the Waymo Driver. You will also collaborate with research teams at Alphabet to address real-world challenges and contribute to the continuous improvement of autonomous driving technology.
Your responsibilities will include conducting research to develop new methods for model training at scale, as well as optimizing existing models for performance and accuracy. You will engage in hands-on experimentation, leveraging your technical skills to implement and test new algorithms. Additionally, you will participate in cross-functional meetings to align your work with downstream teams, ensuring seamless integration of perception systems into the Waymo Driver.
Waymo offers a competitive salary range of $204,000—$259,000 USD, along with eligibility for an annual bonus program and equity incentive plan.
