Staff Backend Engineer - Core Platform

Who you are

You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience building production systems at scale — you've owned services from design through deployment and have war stories from debugging complex distributed systems issues. You possess deep expertise in Java and Spring — you've shipped high-throughput APIs that handle millions of requests and have strong opinions on service architecture, dependency injection, and testing strategies. Your experience with CI/CD practices is robust — you understand how to improve developer velocity and product reliability through effective testing and deployment strategies. You are familiar with containerization and orchestration technologies like Docker and Kubernetes — you've used them to enhance system reliability and scalability. You are committed to ensuring security, privacy, and compliance for sensitive data — you understand the importance of these aspects in healthcare technology. You thrive in a collaborative environment where experimentation is encouraged, and you are eager to learn from both successes and failures.

Desirable

Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure would be a plus — you understand how to leverage cloud services to enhance application performance and reliability. Familiarity with observability tools and practices is also desirable — you know how to implement monitoring and logging to ensure system health and performance.

What you'll do

In this role, you will lead the design, evolution, and reliability of critical backend systems and cross-cutting platform services. You will enhance core systems such as authentication, observability, feature management, and communication infrastructure. You will drive best practices in testing and CI/CD to improve developer velocity and product reliability. You will tackle technical debt through thoughtful refactors and architectural improvements, ensuring that the systems you work on are both robust and maintainable. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including product managers and frontend engineers, to deliver high-quality features that make a meaningful impact on the lives of thousands of people. You will also mentor junior engineers, sharing your knowledge and experience to help them grow in their careers.
