Coupang is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer for Coupang Play to own the infrastructure powering their video platform. You'll work with Java, Spring, and AWS to deliver exceptional streaming experiences. This role requires a strong background in backend engineering and system architecture.
You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience building scalable production systems — you've owned services from design through deployment and have faced the challenges of debugging complex distributed systems. Your expertise in Java and Spring is deep — you've shipped high-throughput APIs that handle millions of requests and have strong opinions on service architecture, dependency injection, and testing strategies. You are familiar with cloud services, particularly AWS, and understand how to leverage them to optimize performance and reliability. You thrive in environments that require a 'Founder's Mentality' — taking ownership of your work and driving projects forward with minimal oversight. You are a problem-solver at heart, eager to tackle complex challenges and innovate in the video streaming space. You enjoy collaborating with cross-functional teams, including product and design, to enhance user experiences and deliver exceptional storytelling.
Experience with video streaming technologies or platforms is a plus, as is familiarity with machine learning applications in enhancing customer experience. A background in optimizing backend systems for high availability and performance will set you apart. In this role, you will own the backend infrastructure that powers Coupang Play, ensuring that our video streaming services are reliable and scalable. You will design and implement high-performance APIs that support both VOD and live content, working closely with frontend engineers to create seamless user experiences. You will be responsible for optimizing database interactions and ensuring that our systems can handle high traffic loads without compromising performance. You will also participate in code reviews and contribute to the overall architecture of our backend systems, ensuring best practices are followed. Your role will involve collaborating with product managers and designers to understand user needs and translate them into technical requirements. You will have the opportunity to mentor junior engineers, sharing your knowledge and helping them grow in their careers.
