Job Description

About the Role

As our client scales their digital platform and business intelligence capabilities, they are looking for a Lead BI Engineer to build and maintain the BI data infrastructure and reporting capabilities that power decision-making across Marketing, Product, Finance, and Operations. This role is crucial in developing scalable BI solutions with a strong emphasis on usability, governance, and business impact. You will be responsible for managing our Tableau reporting environment, developing the BI data layer, and enabling new BI development that empowers stakeholders with accessible and trustworthy insights.

At our client, a Senior BI Engineer is more than a dashboard builder. This role is not about "tell me what to build, and I'll create the report"—this role is about architecting and implementing the right business intelligence solutions for our stakeholders and company. Senior BI Engineers are trusted partners to business leaders and their teammates and play an important role in driving the transformation, governance, and accessibility of sweetgreen's data. They are responsible for delivering key BI infrastructure and reporting capabilities to power decision-making throughout the business. They work with data analysts, data scientists, and business partners to ensure that our business teams are empowered to take action against data.

Your Responsibilities

BI Data Layer Development and Maintenance — Design, build, and maintain the BI data layer that serves as the foundation for all reporting and analytics. Ensure data models are optimized for performance, scalability, and ease of use. Implement data quality monitoring and testing to maintain high standards of reliability.

Tableau Administration and Management — Manage and administer our Tableau environment, including server configuration, user access, permissions, and governance. Maintain existing Tableau reports and dashboards, ensuring they remain accurate, performant, and aligned with business needs. Implement best practices for Tableau development and usage across the organization.

BI Development and Enablement — Lead the development of new dashboards, reports, and visualizations in Tableau to meet evolving business requirements. Enable stakeholders to build their own analyses through well-designed data sources, calculated fields, and self-service capabilities. Establish and maintain documentation, style guides, and governance frameworks for BI development.

Business Partnership and Requirements Gathering — Serve as an embedded thought partner to Marketing, Product, Finance, and Operations teams. Translate business requirements into effective BI solutions, deliver rapid-turnaround reporting for executive decision-making, and proactively surface insights through visualization and reporting.

Technical Leadership and Cross-Functional Collaboration — Act as a technical leader within the Data & Analytics team. Guide architectural decisions on BI tooling, data modeling approaches, and reporting standards. Facilitate cross-departmental collaboration to ensure alignment of BI initiatives with business goals.

Data Flow Understanding and Architecture Input — Understand data flows across the company's tech stack (Snowflake, Brink POS, loyalty platforms, marketing tools). Identify data quality issues, integration gaps, and opportunities for new data sources. Contribute to architecture decisions on tooling, vendor selection, and data platform strategy.

Your Accomplishments & Qualifications

  • 5+ years of experience in BI engineering, BI development, or analytics roles, preferably in Marketing, Growth, Product, or Consumer Analytics environments

  • Expert proficiency in Tableau including dashboard development, Tableau Server/Cloud administration, data source optimization, and governance frameworks

  • Expert proficiency in SQL for complex data analysis, transformation, and performance optimization

  • Strong experience with BI data modeling including dimensional modeling, star/snowflake schemas, and performance optimization for reporting workloads

  • Experience with dbt or similar data transformation tools for building and maintaining the BI data layer

  • Deep knowledge of Snowflake (or similar cloud data warehouses) for BI workloads, including query optimization and cost management

  • Strong business acumen with track record of partnering with non-technical stakeholders (Marketing, Product, Finance) to drive decision-making through data

  • Ability to design intuitive data models and reporting solutions that empower stakeholders to answer their own questions

What you'll get:

  • Highly competitive pay + bonus plan

  • Three different medical plans to suit your and your family's needs

  • Dental and Vision insurance

  • Flexible PTO plan

  • 401k program

  • Employee HSA and FSA
