Staff Backend Engineer - Foundational Systems & Platforms

Who you are

You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience, particularly in building scalable production systems. You’ve taken ownership of services from design through deployment and have navigated the complexities of debugging distributed systems. Your expertise in Java and Spring is deep — you’ve successfully shipped high-throughput APIs that handle millions of requests, and you have strong opinions on service architecture and testing strategies.

You are familiar with cloud technologies, especially AWS, and understand how to leverage them to enhance system performance and reliability. You thrive in collaborative environments, working closely with cross-functional teams to deliver impactful solutions. Your problem-solving skills are top-notch, and you enjoy tackling challenges that require innovative thinking and a hands-on approach.

You are a proactive communicator who can articulate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders. What you'll do

As a Staff Backend Engineer at Coupang, you will be part of the Foundational Systems and Platforms (FSP) organization within Global Operations Technology. Your primary focus will be on developing and maintaining the Inventory Platform, which is crucial for managing inventory across Coupang’s extensive operations. You will also work on the Fulfillment Execution system, orchestrating the complete journey of delivering products to customers.

You will design and implement robust backend services that ensure high availability and performance. Collaborating with product managers and other engineers, you will define system requirements and translate them into technical specifications. You will be responsible for code reviews, ensuring best practices are followed, and mentoring junior team members to foster their development.

Your role will involve troubleshooting and resolving production issues, optimizing existing systems, and contributing to architectural decisions that shape the future of Coupang’s technology stack.
