Senior Software Engineer - Backend

Who you are

You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience building production systems at scale — you've owned services from design through deployment and have navigated complex distributed systems issues with ease. Your deep expertise in Java and Spring allows you to ship high-throughput APIs that handle millions of requests, and you have strong opinions on service architecture, dependency injection, and testing strategies. You thrive in collaborative environments, actively engaging with diverse stakeholders to deliver customer value quickly. Mentoring less-experienced engineers is something you enjoy, as you believe in leveling up your team and setting a good example.

Desirable

Experience with cloud services like AWS or Azure would be a plus, as would familiarity with microservices architecture. You understand the importance of documentation and are comfortable creating and reviewing engineering design documents. A proactive approach to improving systems, infrastructure, and processes is part of your work ethic.

What you'll do

As a Senior Backend Engineer at Marqeta, you will define and deliver well-scoped milestones for projects, potentially taking on the role of technical lead for your team. You will innovate on architecture and write impactful software that powers Marqeta's backend services. Your responsibilities will include creating features, reviewing code, and continuously improving systems and processes. Participation in a rotational on-call pager duty is a required part of the role, ensuring that you are engaged with the operational aspects of the services you build.

You will collaborate closely with product stakeholders to determine the right technical solutions that deliver customer value quickly. Your role will also involve mentoring other engineers, helping them with their craft, and providing guidance to elevate the team's overall performance. You will be part of a Flexible First work culture, allowing you to work remotely within Ontario or British Columbia, Canada.
