Backend Engineer

Who you are

You have 3+ years of experience building backend systems and shipping REST APIs to production — you've tackled complex issues and understand the importance of clean, maintainable code. Your strong Python fundamentals are complemented by experience with async programming and major web frameworks like FastAPI, Django, or Flask. You possess solid data modeling skills and are hands-on with SQL, particularly in query tuning and performance optimization.

You thrive in collaborative environments — working closely with frontend and research teams to deliver fast, reliable features is second nature to you. Your debugging skills are top-notch; you can trace issues end-to-end, reproduce them, and implement fixes while ensuring system integrity and performance. You are data-driven and understand the significance of metrics in guiding your decisions.

Desirable

Experience with containerization and orchestration technologies like Docker and Kubernetes is a plus. Familiarity with cloud services, particularly AWS, will help you operate services effectively in production. You are comfortable with both relational databases like PostgreSQL and graph databases such as Neo4j, and you understand how to enforce data integrity and optimize performance.

What you'll do

In this role, you will own the backend that powers Mem0’s memory platform. Your primary responsibility will be to design and ship REST APIs, defining contracts, versioning, authentication, and rate limits. You will also write migrations and documentation to ensure clarity and maintainability. Modeling data and schemas across relational and graph stores will be a key part of your work, where you will enforce integrity and performance.

You will debug customer issues end-to-end, utilizing logs, metrics, and traces to trace problems back to their root cause. Your role will involve optimizing performance by tuning slow SQL queries using tools like EXPLAIN/ANALYZE, implementing indexes, partitioning, pagination, and caching strategies with technologies like Redis.

Building services in Python will be a significant part of your responsibilities — you will leverage async programming where it helps, using frameworks such as FastAPI, Django, or Flask. You will also manage background jobs, queues, and schedulers to ensure smooth operations.

Operating in the cloud will be essential, as you will containerize applications with Docker, deploy them on Kubernetes (EKS), and utilize AWS primitives like EC2, RDS/Aurora, and S3. Instrumenting everything will be part of your workflow, where you will set custom metrics, structured logging, and tracing, establishing SLOs and alerts using tools like CloudWatch, Prometheus, or OpenTelemetry.

Collaboration is key in this role — you will work closely with frontend and research teams to scope APIs and deliver features to production. Your contributions will directly impact the reliability and performance of Mem0’s memory platform, ensuring a seamless experience for customers.
