Job Description

The Amazon Device Design Team is an inventive R&D group that designs and develops high-profile consumer electronics. What began as Lab126 in 2004 has grown into the Device Design Team behind beloved products like Kindle, Fire tablets, Fire TV, and Amazon Echo. Now, we're looking for an innovative Senior CAD Architect and Model Maker to join us in our mission of creating what's next.

In this hybrid role, you'll combine digital precision with hands-on craftsmanship to lead the design and fabrication of experience prototypes for our next generation of consumer products. Bridging the gap between design intent and real-world function, you'll enable cross-functional teams to test, refine, and validate product concepts through immersive, high-fidelity models.

Key Responsibilities:

CAD Architecture & Design
- Develop detailed 3D CAD models and assemblies for complex consumer product concepts
- Translate design intent into tangible geometry using tools like SolidWorks, Creo, Rhino, and Fusion 360
- Collaborate with industrial designers and engineers to iterate on form, fit, and function

Experience Prototype Development
- Lead the creation of interactive, functional prototypes that simulate real-world product use
- Integrate electronics, sensors, and mechanical components to mimic the user experience
- Apply finishing techniques to enhance realism - paint, texture, lighting, and branding

Model Shop Leadership
- Oversee fabrication workflows, equipment maintenance, and safety protocols
- Source materials and coordinate with external vendors for specialized components

Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Work closely with ID, Engineering, UX research, and leadership to align prototypes with roadmap and innovation priorities
- Present models with work partners, articulating design rationale and prototype capabilities- 7+ years of experience in CAD design and physical model making, preferably in consumer products
- 7+ Expert-level proficiency in CAD software and understanding of fabrication tools (CNC, laser cutting, 3D printing)
- Strong understanding of human factors, ergonomics, and user-centered design
- Experience integrating electronics, mechanical systems, and interactive features into prototypes- Degree in Industrial Design, Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or Fabrication/Model Making
- Experience in wearables, smart home devices, or consumer electronics
- Knowledge of sustainability practices in materials and fabrication
- Passion for innovative problem-solving and a customer-obsessed mindset
