Overview

Microsoft is hiring a Senior Applied Scientist to develop AI infrastructure for agentic AI systems. You'll work with Azure and contribute to LLMs and SLMs using various frameworks. This role requires expertise in machine learning and programming skills.

Job Description

Who you are

You have a strong background in applied science with a focus on AI and machine learning — your experience includes developing scalable infrastructure for training models and working with both proprietary and open-source frameworks. You are proficient in Python and have hands-on experience with machine learning libraries such as TensorFlow and PyTorch. Your curiosity drives you to continuously learn and adapt to new challenges, and you thrive in environments that require independent problem-solving and collaboration.

You possess a deep understanding of large language models (LLMs) and scalable learning models (SLMs) — your work has contributed to the advancement of agentic AI systems, and you are familiar with the scientific methods that underpin these technologies. You are comfortable debugging complex training jobs and documenting your findings to share with your team. Your agile mindset allows you to iterate quickly and pivot when necessary, making you an asset in fast-paced projects.

You value collaboration and have a track record of working effectively with cross-functional teams — your ability to communicate complex ideas clearly helps bridge the gap between technical and non-technical stakeholders. You are motivated by creating meaningful impact and are excited about the potential of AI to empower organizations and individuals.

Desirable

Experience with cloud platforms, particularly Azure, is a plus — you understand how to leverage cloud infrastructure to enhance AI capabilities. Familiarity with agile methodologies and a startup-style mindset will help you thrive in this role, as you will be expected to adapt to changing priorities and contribute to a culture of innovation.

What you'll do

As a Senior Applied Scientist at Microsoft, you will join the CoreAI organization and play a pivotal role in developing the AI stack that powers Azure's innovation. You will focus on building the infrastructure necessary for creating agentic AI systems, contributing to the development of LLMs and SLMs. Your work will involve collaborating with other scientists and engineers to advance scientific methods and scalable infrastructure for training models that achieve frontier-level performance.

You will be responsible for writing efficient code and debugging complex training jobs — your expertise will ensure that the AI systems you help develop are reliable and capable of delivering enterprise-grade workflows. You will document your findings and share insights with your team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and knowledge sharing.

Your role will require you to stay updated on the latest advancements in AI and machine learning — you will be encouraged to explore new frameworks and methodologies that can enhance the capabilities of the systems you are building. You will also have the opportunity to mentor junior team members, sharing your knowledge and helping them grow in their careers.

What we offer

Microsoft offers a collaborative and inclusive work environment where you can thrive and make a meaningful impact. You will have access to cutting-edge technology and resources that will enable you to push the boundaries of what is possible in AI. The company values a growth mindset and encourages employees to innovate and empower others.

You will be part of a diverse team that is committed to building a culture of respect, integrity, and accountability. Microsoft believes in the power of technology to transform lives and is dedicated to creating solutions that empower every person and organization on the planet.

In addition to competitive compensation, Microsoft provides opportunities for professional development and career advancement. You will have the chance to work on projects that have a significant impact on the future of AI and contribute to the mission of empowering individuals and organizations worldwide.
