Thumbtack is hiring a Staff Data Platform Engineer to design and build systems that ensure reliable and actionable data across the organization. You'll work with technologies like AWS, Apache Spark, and Kafka. This role requires significant experience in data engineering and system architecture.
You have 5+ years of experience in data engineering, with a strong background in building scalable data systems that support both real-time and batch processing. You understand the importance of data reliability and have experience designing systems that ensure data is discoverable and actionable across various teams.
Your expertise includes working with cloud platforms like AWS, and you are proficient in using tools such as Apache Spark and Kafka for data ingestion and processing. You have a solid understanding of SQL and can write complex queries to extract insights from large datasets.
You are comfortable defining APIs and data contracts, and you have experience setting service level indicators (SLIs) and service level objectives (SLOs) to ensure the performance and reliability of data systems. You are skilled at balancing latency, cost, and long-term maintainability in your architectural decisions.
You thrive in collaborative environments and enjoy coaching and mentoring junior engineers. You have a track record of working closely with product, machine learning, and analytics teams to identify gaps and prioritize investments in data infrastructure.
Experience with machine learning workflows and tools is a plus, as is familiarity with data warehousing solutions. You are also open to exploring new technologies and methodologies to improve data processing and analytics capabilities.
In this role, you will own the design and architectural direction of the data platform at Thumbtack. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to identify their data needs and ensure that the platform meets those requirements effectively. You will prioritize investments in the data infrastructure and lead initiatives from scope to delivery.
You will be responsible for building and maintaining systems that enable real-time data processing and analytics, ensuring that data is available and reliable for decision-making across the organization. You will also define and implement best practices for data governance and quality assurance.
Your role will involve coaching team members and fostering a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement within the data platform team. You will have the opportunity to influence the roadmap and make impactful decisions that shape the future of data at Thumbtack.
