Job Description

As a Senior Manager of Applied Science within StoreGen, you will be a key technical leader driving Amazon's transformation to AI-native software development. In this pivotal role, you'll lead a dedicated cross-functional R&D team, balancing exploratory research with practical implementation to help achieve our goal of making teams more efficient through AI-native development practices.

Your responsibilities will span the entire spectrum of AI-native development. You'll spearhead the scientific strategy and execution for StoreGen's AI initiatives, identifying high-impact opportunities where applied science can accelerate our transition. This will involve driving research and innovation in critical areas such as specification-centric development, automated validation, and AI-driven testing.

A significant part of your role will be developing frameworks and methodologies to measure and validate the effectiveness of AI-native approaches, ensuring we can demonstrate concrete efficiency gains. You'll build and mentor a team of scientists and engineers, fostering a culture of innovation while maintaining Amazon's high standards for reliability and customer experience.

Collaboration will be key to your success. You'll partner closely with Product and Engineering leadership to translate research innovations into practical tools that can scale across Amazon Stores. Additionally, you'll work with AWS, Amazon Software Builder Experience, and other Amazon AI teams to leverage and influence the development of foundation models and AI infrastructure.

As a thought leader in this space, you'll represent StoreGen in technical forums and strategic discussions, helping shape Amazon's technical future in the AI era. Your expertise and vision will be crucial in guiding Amazon's transformation to AI-native development practices, with the potential to fundamentally change how one of the world's largest technical organizations builds software.

Key job responsibilities
• Lead the scientific strategy and execution for StoreGen's AI initiatives, identifying high-impact opportunities where applied science can accelerate the transition to AI-native development

• Drive research and innovation in areas critical to AI-native development, such as specification-centric development, automated validation, and AI-driven testing

• Develop frameworks and methodologies to measure and validate the effectiveness of AI-native approaches, ensuring we can demonstrate concrete efficiency gains

• Build and mentor a team of scientists and engineers, fostering a culture of innovation while maintaining Amazon's high standards for reliability and customer experience

• Partner with Product and Engineering leadership to translate research innovations into practical tools that scale across Amazon Stores

• Collaborate with AWS and other Amazon AI teams to leverage and influence the development of foundation models and AI infrastructure

• Represent StoreGen in technical forums and strategic discussions, helping shape Amazon's technical future in the AI era• PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, or related field, or equivalent practical experience
• Experience applying ML/AI to real-world problems at scale
• Strong track record of leading technical teams and delivering production ML systems
• Deep expertise in large language models and their application to software development
• Experience with ML operations and production deployment of AI systems• Experience with developer productivity tools and software development lifecycle optimization
• Track record of successful collaboration with product and engineering teams
• Strong publication record or equivalent contributions to the field
• Experience with responsible AI development and ethical considerations

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $196,900/year in our lowest geographic market up to $340,300/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
