Senior/ Staff Software Engineer, Data Infrastructure

Who you are

You have 5+ years of experience in software engineering, particularly in building and maintaining data infrastructure at scale — you've designed and implemented distributed systems that handle large volumes of data efficiently. Your expertise in Java and Python allows you to write clean, maintainable code while also understanding the intricacies of data processing and storage.

You are familiar with cloud services, particularly AWS, and have experience deploying applications in cloud environments — you understand how to leverage cloud-native technologies to enhance system performance and reliability. Your knowledge of containerization technologies like Docker and orchestration tools such as Kubernetes enables you to create scalable and resilient applications.

You have a strong grasp of data processing frameworks and tools, including Elasticsearch and Kafka, which you have used to build real-time data pipelines — you know how to ensure data quality and integrity while optimizing for performance. Your experience with data modeling and database design allows you to create efficient schemas that support complex queries and analytics.

You are a proactive problem solver who enjoys taking ownership of critical initiatives — you thrive in collaborative environments where you can work closely with cross-functional teams to turn raw data into actionable insights. Your communication skills enable you to articulate technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders effectively.

Desirable

Experience with machine learning frameworks and tools is a plus, as you may collaborate with data scientists to integrate AI capabilities into the data infrastructure. What you'll do

In this role, you will be at the forefront of designing and evolving Intercom's data infrastructure — you will take ownership of critical initiatives that ensure the data platform is scalable, robust, and future-proof. You will collaborate with product and research teams to understand their data needs and translate them into technical solutions that drive business value.

You will design and implement data pipelines that process and analyze large datasets in real-time — your work will empower teams across the organization to make data-driven decisions. You will also be responsible for maintaining and optimizing existing systems, ensuring they meet performance and reliability standards.

As a senior engineer, you will mentor junior team members, sharing your knowledge and best practices to foster a culture of learning and growth within the team. You will participate in code reviews, providing constructive feedback to help improve code quality and team collaboration.

You will stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies, evaluating their potential impact on Intercom's data strategy — your insights will help shape the future direction of the data infrastructure. You will also contribute to the development of technical documentation, ensuring that systems are well-documented and accessible to all team members.
