Job Description

We are seeking an Applied Scientist to develop and innovate on advanced LLM solutions that drive value across Amazon’s largest vendors. In this role, you will work on improving our internal LLMs to automatically enrich our shopping catalogue with hundreds of millions of items. Beyond catalogue enrichment, you will work on applying LLM technologies for the development of Amazon's new generation of vendor Paid Services, delivering high-impact machine learning models to vendors for business reasoning and support automation.

You will work directly with other scientists and engineers to translate algorithms into production systems, optimizing model performance at scale, and Product Managers to align technical solutions with business objectives.

This position is ideal for candidates with deep expertise in machine learning, demonstrated experience in developing and implementing advanced ML algorithms, strong analytical and mathematical skills, and a passion for solving complex business problems through practical applications of machine learning and statistical methods.


Key job responsibilities
The Applied Scientist is accountable for:
(1) Design and develop sophisticated ML algorithms to solve complex business problems across vendors, including novel approaches for feature engineering and model architectures
(2) Drive technical excellence through rigorous experimentation, performance validation, and collaboration with other scientists to review and improve model designs
(3) Partner with MLEs to productionize solutions and with Product Managers to identify high-impact ML applications, while being the technical voice in business reviews
(4) Develop evaluation frameworks and metrics to quantify model performance, ensuring business value through statistical validation
(5) Contribute to scientific advancement through internal/external publications, active participation in ML communities, and staying current with latest developments


About the team
In this position, you will be part of the JP Science and Data team, consisting of scientists, business intelligence engineers, data engineers, and machine learning engineers, collaborating with Product Managers and Software Developers worldwide. Our current projects touch on the areas of causal inference, representation learning, anomaly detection, forecasting, LLMs and more. As part of working on Paid Services, you will be exposed to all other projects the team works on: we believe that collaboration is paramount, and working in isolation does not lead to a happy team.
We place strong emphasis on continuous learning through internal mechanisms for our team members to keep on growing their expertise and keep up with the state of the art. Our goal is to be primary science team for vendor solutions in Amazon, worldwide.
- 3+ years of building models for business application experience
- PhD, or Master's degree and 5+ years of CS, CE, ML or related field experience
- Experience programming in Java, C++, Python or related language
- Experience in any of the following areas: algorithms and data structures, parsing, numerical optimization, data mining, parallel and distributed computing, high-performance computing- Experience with modeling tools such as R, scikit-learn, Spark MLLib, MxNet, Tensorflow, numpy, scipy etc.
- Experience with large scale distributed systems such as Hadoop, Spark etc.
