Job Description

The Amazon Robotics team is seeking broad, curious engineers to join our robotic manipulation team. We holistically design, build, and deliver end-to-end robotic systems. Our team is also responsible for core infrastructure and tools that serve as the backbone of our robotic applications, enabling roboticists, machine learning scientists, software engineers, and hardware engineers to deploy systems in the field.

Key job responsibilities
Work with an interdisciplinary team to design new robotic and servo driven gantry based industrial automation workcells for e-commerce, from concept to production, including design, prototype, test, validation, and safety/product certification across the US and EU.

Architect and guide the design of machine guarding and safety control systems for complex industrial automation and robotics workcells to be functionally safe for use by Amazon associates at our Fulfillment Centers.

Write requirements, functional specifications, roadmap documents and develop milestone based project schedules pertaining the safety system.

Apply ANSI/ISO/IEC industrial safety standards for the development lifecycle and guide hardware and controls engineers to ensure systems comply to safety standards.

Lead and maintain Technical Construction Files (TCF) including Safety Risk Assessments, Safe distance and guarding calculations, safety requirement specifications, safety management plans, safety concepts, and verification and validation plans for the system.

Lead the engagement with TUV for field evaluation of product and functional safety certifications and ensure delivery of certification.

Work with the Operations, Manufacturing, Supply Chain and Quality organizations, as well as vendors to ensure a smooth production transition of design changes.

Deep-dive machinery safety issues, optimize configurations, develop and execute tests to verify functionality.

Travel to vendors, installation sites, and manufacturing partners to ensure high quality bar is maintained.

15% travel requirement to Boston and Europe- BS in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Equivalent
- Established background in Industrial Automation, Robotics or Mechatronic Systems
- 7+ years of experience in the design of complex industrial automation and robotics system design, build and commissioning with a focus in machinery safety
- Thorough understanding and experience with applying principals, theories and concepts in machinery and electrical safety including key international standards such as ANSI R15.06, ISO 12100, ISO 13849, IEC 62061, IEC 61508, IEC 61496, NFPA 79, NEC 70, UL 508A
- Experience in design of high voltage (480 VAC / 120 VAC) and low voltage (< 50 V) electrical design for control system of industrial machinery
- Can read, understand and redline electrical schematics, P&ID and mechanical drawings
- Familiar with opening and reviewing 2D and 3D mechanical drawings in SolidWorks, AutoCAD or e-viewer
- Demonstrated experience working in a regulated industry (Functional Safety, Military, Medical, Automotive) applying standards to design and work products.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills along with strong organizational skills and the ability to work well with cross-functional teams of hardware and software engineers- MS in Electrical Engineering or Equivalent
- Functional Safety Engineer Certification through TUV Rheinland or equivalent.
- Significant and diverse experience with industrial automation and robotics field from design, build, commissioning and life cycle management at scale
- Experience with applying machinery safety in EU integration, regulatory compliance, and safety.
- Experience with safety system programming including Safety PLCs
- Desire to work in a fast-paced environment
- Desire to develop deep understanding of the business and end user needs
- Desire to commit and follow through on complex, multi-year programs
- Ability to resolve complex issues in creative, efficient, and effective ways

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $128,600/year in our lowest geographic market up to $213,600/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company.
