Job Description

Amazon Robotics is revolutionizing warehouse automation through innovative robotics solutions that transform how we deliver for our customers. We're seeking an exceptional Senior Systems Development Engineer to lead the development and implementation of next-generation sortation automation technologies that will scale across our global network.

As a Senior Systems Development Engineer in the Robotic Sortation vertical, you'll be at the forefront of developing and implementing new robotics automation technologies that will define the future of our building-level solution designs. This role offers a unique opportunity to influence critical R&D technologies while scaling solutions across Amazon's global network.

Key job responsibilities
- Lead the design, development, and optimization of controls systems for complex robotics and automation solutions within our sortation facilities including machine control code, networking, electrical design, and safety design
- Drive technical architecture decisions and implementation strategies for new automation technologies from concept through production deployment across multiple building-level solution designs
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including R&D, mechanical, software, and electrical engineering, and strategic partners to deliver integrated automation solutions
- Provide technical leadership in the convergence of modern software development practices with industrial control systems
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives through data-driven optimization and innovative problem-solving
- Debug internal and field issues; develop tools and best practices for system monitoring and troubleshooting
- Develop controls code utilizing structured text and ladder-logic on Codesys and RSLogix 5000 platforms
- Mentor and develop junior engineers in design and development best practices
- Up to 25% travel expected to support onsite system testing

About the team
Our Robotic Sortation Technologies team operates with a startup mindset within Amazon, fostering innovation while leveraging the resources and scale of a global technology leader. We collaborate with world-class automation partners and internal Amazon teams to push the boundaries of what's possible in warehouse automation.

- 6+ years of systems design, software development, operations, automation, and process improvement experience
- 4+ years of designing or architecting (design patterns, reliability and scaling) of new and existing systems experience
- Experience programming with at least one modern language such as Python, Ruby, Golang, Java, C++, C#, Rust
- Experience with Allen-Bradley PLCs, Siemens PLCs, and/or Soft PLCs/IPCs
- Demonstrated experience with IEC standards for electrical controls for robotics and Functional Safety standards
- Experience with systems testing and validation, including end-to-end system integration
- Solid debugging skills and the ability to diagnose and solve difficult problems
- Commitment to rigorous testing practices and design process flows- Experience with distributed systems at scale
- Knowledge of engineering practices and patterns for the full software/hardware/networks development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control management, build processes, testing, certification, and livesite operations
- Experience leading the design, automation, deployment, and support of large-scale infrastructure
- Master’s Degree in Robotics, Controls, or related field
- Experience developing controls code utilizing Codesys platform
- Background in material handling equipment (MHE) or warehouse automation
- Hands-on experience with prototyping and hardware design
- Experience leading and supporting technical teams and influencing cross-functional stakeholders
- Experience with TCP/IP and industrial networks
- Experience with HMI design and development

Our compensation reflects the cost of labor across several US geographic markets. The base pay for this position ranges from $136,100/year in our lowest geographic market up to $235,200/year in our highest geographic market. Pay is based on a number of factors including market location and may vary depending on job-related knowledge, skills, and experience. Amazon is a total compensation company. Dependent on the position offered, equity, sign-on payments, and other forms of compensation may be provided as part of a total compensation package, in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits.
