Job Description

Who you are

You have a Bachelor's degree or equivalent practical experience and at least 8 years of experience in software development using one or more programming languages such as Python, C, C++, Java, or JavaScript. With 5 years of experience in a technical leadership role, you have overseen projects and have 3 years of experience in people management, supervision, or team leadership. You may also hold a Master's degree or PhD in Computer Science or a related technical field, and you have experience working in a complex, cross-functional organization. Your background includes scaling systems from the pilot/start-up phase to a mature product, demonstrating your ability to manage both technical and team dynamics effectively.

As a Software Engineering Manager, you possess the technical expertise to provide leadership on major projects while also managing a team of engineers. You not only optimize your own code but also ensure that your team is able to optimize theirs. You are skilled in managing project goals, contributing to product strategy, and developing your team to meet the demands of a fast-paced environment. Your experience allows you to guide engineers across multiple teams, ensuring that they are aligned with the company's objectives and best practices.

Desirable

You have a strong understanding of information retrieval, artificial intelligence, natural language processing, distributed computing, large-scale system design, networking, security, data compression, and user interface design. Your ability to oversee system designs within the scope of broader areas and review product or system development code to solve ambiguous problems is a key asset. You are familiar with best practices in code reviews, including style guidelines, accuracy, testability, and efficiency, which helps maintain high standards within your team.

What you'll do

In this role, you will lead a team of engineers, guiding them through the complexities of software development and ensuring that they have the resources and support needed to succeed. You will be responsible for evolving the roadmap to meet anticipated future requirements and infrastructure needs, which involves strategic planning and foresight. Your leadership will be crucial in overseeing system designs and ensuring that they align with the company's goals and technical standards.

You will also be involved in reviewing code developed by other engineers, providing constructive feedback to ensure adherence to best practices. Your role will require you to manage project goals effectively, balancing technical leadership with team management. You will contribute to product strategy, helping to shape the direction of projects and ensuring that your team is equipped to deliver high-quality results.

Collaboration will be a key aspect of your role, as you will work closely with cross-functional teams to drive projects forward. You will foster an environment of continuous improvement, encouraging your team to innovate and optimize their processes. Your ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders will be essential in ensuring that projects are aligned with business objectives.

What we offer

At Google, you will be part of a dynamic team that is committed to pushing the boundaries of technology. You will have the opportunity to work on impactful projects that shape the future of business messaging. The company values diversity and encourages you to apply even if your experience doesn't match every requirement. You will be supported in your professional development and have access to resources that help you grow in your career. Google offers a competitive compensation package and a collaborative work environment that fosters innovation and creativity.
