Senior Backend Engineer - Camera Foundation

Who you are

You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience building production systems at scale — you've owned services from design through deployment and have war stories from debugging complex distributed systems issues. You possess deep expertise in Java and Spring — you've shipped high-throughput APIs that handle millions of requests and have strong opinions on service architecture, dependency injection, and testing strategies. You are comfortable collaborating with cross-functional teams to design, develop, and maintain software infrastructure — your communication skills allow you to effectively convey technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders. You have a passion for mentoring junior engineers — you enjoy sharing your knowledge and helping others grow in their careers. You thrive in a fast-paced environment where you can tackle challenging problems and contribute to innovative solutions. You are committed to optimizing and enhancing the performance of existing software components — you understand the importance of maintaining high standards in code quality and system reliability.

Desirable

Experience with cloud-based systems or physical security solutions would be a plus. Familiarity with large-scale distributed systems and high-performance backend architectures is highly desirable. What you'll do

As a Senior Backend Engineer at Verkada, you will lead the development of large-scale, high-performance backend systems that support our cloud camera ecosystem. You will collaborate with cross-functional teams to design, develop, and maintain the software infrastructure for our cloud camera products. Your role will involve optimizing and enhancing the performance of existing software components to ensure they meet the evolving needs of our customers. You will mentor junior software engineers, providing guidance and support as they navigate their projects. You will be responsible for ensuring that the systems you build are scalable and reliable, capable of handling among the largest QPS in the company. You will participate in code reviews and contribute to the overall improvement of the engineering practices within the team. You will stay updated on industry trends and best practices, continuously seeking ways to innovate and improve our backend systems. You will work closely with product managers and other stakeholders to understand user requirements and translate them into technical specifications. You will also have the opportunity to contribute to architectural decisions and influence the direction of our technology stack.
