Dropbox is hiring a Staff Backend Product Software Engineer to lead a team in building innovative cloud-based solutions. You'll work with technologies like Java and Python, focusing on backend systems and APIs. This role requires extensive experience in backend engineering and leadership skills.
You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience, particularly in building scalable production systems. You’ve owned services from design through deployment and have navigated complex distributed systems issues with ease. Your deep expertise in Java and Python allows you to create high-performance APIs that handle significant traffic, and you have strong opinions on service architecture and testing strategies. You are comfortable leading teams and mentoring engineers, raising the technical bar through coaching and example. You thrive in ambiguous problem spaces and can translate high-level company metrics into actionable technical roadmaps. Your experience with cloud platforms, particularly AWS, equips you to drive reliability and scalability in foundational systems. You are also familiar with containerization technologies like Docker and orchestration tools such as Kubernetes, which you leverage to enhance deployment processes.
Experience with modern machine learning frameworks and APIs is a plus, as is familiarity with consumer-facing product onboarding flows on the web. You understand the importance of user experience and can contribute to creating high-quality consumer-facing applications.
In this role, you will own large, ambiguous problem spaces that are directly tied to Dropbox's core metrics. You will lead a team of 15-20 engineers across various disciplines, collaborating on ideas that shape area-level decisions. Your responsibilities will include setting high standards for engineering excellence and driving operational rigor across foundational systems. You will remain hands-on, engaging in daily coding, design authorship, and critical reviews. Your influence will extend to shaping Core Engineering roadmaps and establishing technical direction for the organization. You will mentor senior talent and help them grow, fostering a culture of technical leadership within the team. As you grow in this role, you will transition from a cross-team technical driver to an org-level technical strategist, optimizing for the company as a whole.
Dropbox offers a competitive compensation package, with salaries ranging from $223,400 to $302,200 depending on your location within the US. You will have the opportunity to work remotely, allowing for flexibility in your work environment. The company culture emphasizes collaboration and innovation, providing you with the resources and support needed to succeed in your role. You will be part of a mission-driven team focused on simplifying the way people work together, empowering individuals and businesses to collaborate seamlessly. We encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't match every requirement, as we value diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
