Wikimedia is seeking a Senior Data Scientist on a contract basis to support a research initiative focused on understanding user engagement and traffic patterns. You'll utilize Python, SQL, and Jupyter to analyze data and produce insights. This role is fully remote.
You have a strong background in data science with at least 5 years of experience in analyzing complex datasets and deriving actionable insights. Your expertise in Python and SQL allows you to manipulate and analyze data efficiently, and you are comfortable using Jupyter notebooks for your analyses. You have a keen understanding of statistical methods and are able to apply them to real-world problems, particularly in the context of user engagement and traffic analysis.
You are detail-oriented and possess excellent problem-solving skills, enabling you to identify trends and patterns in data that others might overlook. Your experience with data visualization tools helps you communicate your findings effectively to both technical and non-technical stakeholders. You thrive in collaborative environments and enjoy working with cross-functional teams to drive data-driven decision-making.
Experience with time-series analysis and natural experiments is a plus, as is familiarity with data privacy guidelines. You are proactive in seeking out new methodologies and tools to enhance your analytical capabilities, and you are always looking for ways to improve the quality of your analyses.
In this role, you will support Wikimedia's research initiative by conducting thorough analyses of user traffic patterns and engagement metrics. You will produce descriptive analyses that help the team understand how different traffic sources relate to on-wiki engagement. Your work will involve cleaning and joining datasets, creating summary tables, and developing Jupyter notebooks to document your analyses.
You will also conduct time-series analyses to track traffic health indicators and explore the relationship between traffic sources and user engagement. By assisting in the analysis of natural experiments, you will help the team understand the downstream impacts of changes in visibility on editing activity and content quality. Your insights will be crucial in informing future improvements to search visibility and content reuse partnerships.
Wikimedia offers a unique opportunity to contribute to a mission-driven organization that values transparency and collaboration. As a contractor, you will have the flexibility to work remotely while being part of a team that is dedicated to improving the quality and accessibility of information worldwide. You will gain valuable experience working on impactful projects that directly influence user engagement and content quality across Wikimedia's platforms. We encourage you to apply even if your experience doesn't match every requirement, as we value diverse perspectives and backgrounds.
