Senior Software Engineer, Backend Platform

Who you are

You have 5+ years of backend engineering experience building production systems at scale — you've owned services from design through deployment and have navigated complex distributed systems issues with confidence. Your deep expertise in Java and Spring allows you to ship high-throughput APIs that handle millions of requests, and you have strong opinions on service architecture, dependency injection, and testing strategies. You thrive in environments where you can push for excellence and take ownership of the problems you tackle, working closely with both leadership and engineering teams to solve real challenges with urgency and care.

You are comfortable with ambiguity and enjoy collaborating with cross-functional teams to improve developer experience and raise the baseline for reliability. Your experience with AWS and cloud-based solutions enables you to design scalable and efficient backend systems that meet the needs of a rapidly growing customer base. You understand the importance of building shared frameworks and libraries that abstract common concerns, and you are eager to contribute to a generational company at a true inflection point.

Desirable

Experience with microservices architecture and containerization technologies like Docker and Kubernetes would be a plus. Familiarity with CI/CD practices and tools is also desirable, as is a background in working with legal or professional services domains.

What you'll do

As a Senior Backend Engineer at Harvey, you will play a crucial role in building and operating the backend platform that supports all of our services. You will design and implement shared frameworks and libraries that abstract common concerns, improving the overall developer experience and ensuring high reliability across our systems. You will collaborate closely with product managers and other engineers to define technical requirements and translate them into scalable solutions.

You will be responsible for optimizing existing services and ensuring they can handle increased loads as we scale. This includes monitoring performance, troubleshooting issues, and implementing best practices for code quality and testing. You will also participate in code reviews, providing constructive feedback to your peers and helping to maintain a high standard of engineering excellence within the team.
